- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented that discusses the article "On the Slave Trade,' by Benjamin Franklin, the book "The Algerine Spy in Pennsylvania," by Peter Markoe, and the anonymous letters contained in the book "Salmagundi." The role of Barbary or North African figures in these early U.S. works is addressed. Topics include the use of pseudonyms in early American publications, the characterization of Muslims in political debates, and political satire.
