- Title
Unternehmen: Wege in die Zukunft.
- Abstract
The expenses for research and development in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry decreased in 2020. Companies invested two-thirds of Germany's total research expenses, which amounted to approximately 106 billion euros. The chemical and pharmaceutical industry stabilized its internal expenditures for research and development, while other sectors experienced a decline. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research has taken measures to promote research and development related to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on health research regarding antibiotic resistance and machine learning in pharmaceutical research. However, there are challenges in measuring research productivity and dealing with increasing complexity. The ministry has also established a research focus on climate neutrality and has been investing in research and innovation in this field for years. The chemical industry provides solutions for agricultural adaptation measures and new developments in the field of electric vehicles. BASF is an example of a successful spin-off and filed the most patents in the chemical industry in 2020. Flexible alliances and the use of artificial intelligence are proposed as measures to increase research productivity.
