- Abstract
The article presents a historical account of German explorers, scientists and storytellers who have created romantic and revolutionary visions of the Caribbean. It mentions England, Holland, Portugal and Spain as leaders in the race for conquest in the New World and cites the role of German explorers in the mapping of new territories. The entry of scientific researchers led by German-born naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian into the New World by the end of the seventeenth century is discussed.
