- Title
To View or Not to View? Jean-Philippe Toussaint's Televisual Imaginary.
- Authors
Albright, Arcana
- Abstract
This essay examines how Jean-Philippe Toussaint's La Télévision (1997) puts into play the dueling imaginaries of television and books in order to make a convincing case for the viability of the novel as cultural form, espeàally in a world in which the televisual image dominâtes the cultural landscape. It argues that Toussaint's televisual imaginary is a space wherein the novel exists as antidote to the alienating forces of modernity and post-modernity as epitomized by the televisual image. The novel ultimately suggests that the question is not whether or not to view television but, rather, how to view it.
