- Abstract
Since 2016, the analysis of disinformation and fake news has become one of the main trends in scientific research fields. In order to discover the topics, areas of knowledge, countries of origin and methodologies of these studies, as well as to analyse their impact, a systematic literature review was conducted in the Web of Science database. A total of 605 articles published between 2016 and 2020 were analysed. Nonparametric descriptive and inferential statistical methods (Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests) were applied with the aim of discovering significant differences in the number of references received for each of the aforementioned variables. The most frequent topics are possible solutions to tackle disinformation, but papers on the propagation patterns of false content achieve greater impact. There is a notable presence of quantitative studies, mainly from English-speaking sources. The methodological approach is the only variable that can be considered relevant to the impact of this research.
