- Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the actions developed to control leprosy by professionals working in the Family Health Strategy in a hyperendemic capital of northeastern Brazil. Methods: An evaluative, cross-sectional, quantitative study carried out with 81 professionals from the Family Health Strategy in São Luís/MA/Brazil. Data were collected through semistructured questionnaires containing sociodemographic variables and leprosy control actions developed. Results: There was a predominance of female professionals (80.20%), aged between 40 and 59 years (51.90%), with statutory employment (43.20%) and who had already undergone specific training in leprosy (79.95 %). It is noteworthy that all nurses interviewed (100.00%) reported filling out a notification form, approaching contacts, examining contacts at the Basic Health Unit, indicating/forwarding contacts for BCG vaccination and carrying out health education. Conclusion: The actions proposed by the leprosy control program are not implemented in their entirety. The importance of the professional nurse in the effective execution of the actions of prevention and control of the disease was evidenced.
