- Authors
Tarantino, Giovanni
- Abstract
The article explores the interpretation of earthquakes as natural disaster explainable by science or divine admonition for modern sins. In 1750, quakes that shook London became an occasion for debate on the alterations taking place in leisure activities, reading tastes, religiosity and customs of Londoners in England. Charles Wesley and John Wesley, founders of English Methodism, urged worshippers to avoid damnation by altering their lives in response to the Lisbon disaster.
