HERMETIC POETRY AND THE SECOND PERSON.

- Abstract
Hermetic poetry, by eliding its contextual referents, makes problematic the hermeneutical concept of understanding one another through dialogue. This is particularly pronounced in such poetry's use of personal pronouns. This paper addresses this problem through a reading of selected hermetic poems against the background of Gadamer's literary aesthetics, especially his essay 'Who Am I and Who Are You?', to suggest that successful hermetic poetry reveals a particular kind of intersubjective truth, that the 'I' and 'You' can inhabit one another's positions.
