- Abstract
Several microparticulated diets (MPD) were evaluated with respect to the growth and survival of tropical gar Atractosteus tropicus larvae. Previously, the degree of hydrolysis (GH) and the total free amino acid content (AALT) of various ingredients were analysed, using multienzymatic extracts of larvae of three ages (9, 15 and 31 days after hatching). Results show that, for the three ages, the highest GHs were recorded for the shrimp and swimming crab meals, and the highest AALT was obtained for the hydrolised fish. Considering these results, five diets were designed: 1) fish meal (DP), 2) squid meal (DCa), 3) a combination of pork and poultry meals (DR), 4) a combination of fish meal and wheat gluten (DP/T), 5) a combination of pork and poultry meals and wheat gluten (DR/T), and a trout diet (DCo). Previous to the in vivo evaluation, the values of GH and AALT were determined for each diet. The DCa recorded the highest GH, and the greatest AALT was recorded for the DR/T. The in vivo evaluation indicated that the larvae fed the DP and the DR obtained the greatest growth and survival (105 mm, 75% and 98 mm, 68% respectively), in comparison with the other treatments. The results indicate that the use of designed feeds based on digestive physiology makes it possible to improve the growth and production of A. tropicus juveniles.
