- Title
Ethiopian-Sudanese Relations, 1974 - 1984.
- Abstract
The article discusses foreign relations between Ethiopia and Sudan. The author discusses how a revolution in Ethiopia following the death of Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie led to changes in Ethiopian foreign policy. Secessionist movements in Eritrea were supported by the Sudanese government while Ethiopia supported insurgents in Southern Sudan. The Dergue junta struggled to maintain its international allies following the revolution, leading Sudanese president Gaafar Nimeiri to offer aid in negotiations with Eritrea. The death of Dergue leader Aman Andom strained relations as Dergue leader Mengistu Haile Mariam advocated war against Sudan. The influence of the U.S. and Soviet Union on Ethiopian-Sudanese relations is noted.
