- Authors
INNEMÉE, KAREL
- Abstract
The article discusses the discovery of an 8th-century Syrian mural painting of the Epiphany in the Church of the Holy Virgin in the Syrian Deir al-Surian monastery in Wadi al-Natrun, Egypt. The author explains the restoration of the church's murals that began in 1995, with focus given to the study of various layers of paintings, as the Epiphany work was located beneath a painting of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. Topics discussed include the painting's composition and iconography, particularly its relation to the other murals depicting the life of Christ, and its relation to Egyptian church architecture.
