- Title
Capitalism, Conservation, and the Contested Legacies of Theodore Roosevelt.
- Authors
Schumacher, Frank
- Abstract
While Morgan favored doing business outside of the public limelight, Roosevelt interpreted the government as the ultimate arbiter of the public interest and thus advanced an interventionist agenda during his presidency. The author underlines that, despite Roosevelt's humble dislike of commemorative statues of himself, "Roosevelt is the best memorialized president in American history.... The list of what might be called Roosevelt shrines in America is very long and very impressive" (218). Despite some shared experiences, Roosevelt and Morgan arrived at diametrically opposed perspectives on the social responsibility of big business and its relationship to government.
