- Abstract
The article discusses the role of free verse in the development of the Symbolist movement at the turn of the twentieth century. Topics mentioned include Jean Moréas, founder of Symbolism, and his works "Le Symbolisme" and "Le Pèlerin passionné," the views of writers such as André Gide and Gustave Kahn, and the importance that Symbolists placed on freedom of expression. Quotes from writers help show the development of free verse as an art form, as writers such as Henri Ghéon proposed rules for poets to follow.
