- Abstract
The article presents a textual criticism of several apocryphal books of the New Testament that designate themselves as apocryphal texts. After discussing the etymology of the Greek term ἀπόκρυφος, the author discusses whether the apocryphal texts conveyed secret knowledge or should be considered underground literature. He then examines criticism of these writings by fathers of the early church as well as their reception among gnostics. Examples are primarily drawn from the apocryphal gospel of Thomas.
