- Abstract
The article focuses on the inclusion of musical instruments in the paintings of 19th-century artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The article discusses the form of string instruments in Rossetti's art, his use of instruments as pictorial, expressive and symbolic elements and how the instruments may be treated as isolated art objects. The article goes on to discuss the deliberate unplayability of the instruments and how they deviate from real instruments on which they are based, such as a lute or koto.
