- Title
John Deare's marble reliefs for Sir Andrew Corbet Corbet, Bt.
- Authors
Avery, Charles
- Abstract
The article offers a look at the version in marble of John Deare's relief of "Edward and Eleanor." What qualifies the relief as a masterpiece is its suave composition, according to the author, which emphasises calligraphic curves in the poses and lie of the limbs that echo the outline of the oval dish that Deare cut into the flat slab to accommodate some of the depth of his figures. Deare is believed to have modelled the composition in clay, on a wooden board with a frame round the edge, like a tray. The date of 1790 on the marble carving serves to explain why this date is on a relief which was most likely acquired by Baronet Andrew Corbet Corbet only some two years later.
