- Abstract
This article examines the relationship between the characters of Care and Sport as defined by the French meaning of the word deride in John Milton's poem "L'Allegro." The image of Sport that wrinkled Care derides evokes a scene in which Sport makes fun of Care's furrowed brow. In his pun on derides, however, Milton further concretizes and dramatizes the image. The French meaning of deride also alters the tone of the two characters' interaction. If Sport is to deride in the English sense of mocking, Care's worry wrinkles would simply change to anger wrinkles. Instead, Sport derides wrinkled Care in the French sense of smoothing away wrinkles.
