The article reflects on fundamental rights to personal liberty and values of democratic life. Topics discussed include illustration of the rights by the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990, different approach of the European Convention on Human Rights on rights for personal liberty and focuses on Article 8 of the Convention, the right to respect for private life, and concerns raised by Lord Bingham, former President of the Supreme Court of Great Britain, on Article 5, right to liberty rights.
