- Abstract
The article discusses the effects of the U.S. Indian Reorganization Act (IRA) on the Yankton Sioux tribe of South Dakota. The IRA was part of the U.S. government's New Deal reforms aimed at Native Americans and dealt with the organization of tribal governments, economic development on reservations and Indian education policy. It is argued that while the Yankton Sioux approved the IRA, their efforts to create a tribal government were largely rejected by the U.S. Office of Indian Affairs (OIA). The financial troubles of the tribe and subsequent sale of land to the U.S. government are also explained.
