- Authors
Adler, Gary
- Abstract
The article focuses on the increasing openness of American Christian congregations towards membership for gay men and lesbians in the early 21st century. The author explores how the cultural processes of religious organizations affect the bridging practices of Christian congregations and their influence on the openness of church membership. The author presents a boundary-bridging cultural model to help conceptualize the bridging practices. The author contends that factors including religious tradition, congregational educational demographics and theological culture have a strong influence on openness towards gay men and lesbians in Christian religious organizations.
