- Abstract
The article presents an in-depth investigation into the events and aftermath of the July 6, 1944 Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus fire of Hartford, Connecticut. The popularity and tradition of the circus in Hartford is reviewed. Details are given describing the events of the fire itself and the theories regarding its cause. Extensive discussion is provided describing how in the resultant investigations city officials avoided the blame for negligence and placed responsibility on the circus officials instead and how the circus then left the city.
