- Abstract
Objective: The article sought to evaluate the feasibility of implanting a system for the capture, storage and use of rainwater for non-drinking purposes at the Federal Justice Cultural Center (CCJF) in the city of Rio de Janeiro, RJ. Theoretical reference: A bibliographical review was prepared of the panorama of water resources in the world, Brazil and Rio de Janeiro, as well as of systems for the use of rainwater, of the forecast of rainwater consumption in institutions, as well as of the normalization applied in Brazil. Methods: Rainfall, demand and non-potable water consumption data were obtained in the building, the roof catchment area of the institution and calculation of the volume of the storage reservoir by different dimensioning methods, according to NBR 15527/2019. Results and conclusions: The demand for water related to non-potable uses was higher than 4 times the volume of usable rain, so it was considered a reduction in demand, in the service of 8 days a month. The direct savings in the value of the drinking water bill were 14% and 12%, for the years 2014 and 2015, respectively, if the rainwater recovery system were in operation. Implications of research: The research brings scientific contribution from the potential for the use of rainwater, in substitution of drinking water, for the economy in the implantation of sustainable solutions in the management of water resources. Originality/value: The study showed in a relevant way, based on the results obtained, the efficiency in the use of a system for the use of rainwater for non-potable purposes, with discussion in the scientific community to carry out more studies in the context of the management of water resources.
