COMPOSITION AS IDENTITY, THE IDENTICAL WITH OR DIFFERENT FROM ARGUMENT IN BODHICARYĀVATĀRA8.90-103 (AND ELSEWHERE), AND CATEGORY MISTAKES.

- Abstract
The article argues that the identical with or different (ID) arguments in Bodhicaryavatara are not fallacious and rejects philosopher Paul William's category mistake objection when dealing with identity and part consciousness. It explains the role of compositional nihilism in the reconstruction of Santideva's argument for altruism and articulates how William's critique of the ID argument applies to the debate about composition as identity. It suggests an alternative critique of ID arguments.
