- Title
THE NORTHERN IRELAND ASSEMBLY 1982-86: THE FAILURE OF AN EXPERIMENT.
- Authors
Smyth, P. D. H.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the dissolution of the Northern Ireland Assembly on June 23, 1986 by the Order of Council. The founding of the Northern Ireland Assembly was an experiment in representational politics as an effect of the economic decline and sectarian violence in Northern Ireland in the late 1970s to early 1980s. The constitutional problems in Northern Ireland has led to the Anglo-Irish Process that stipulates any settlement in Northern Ireland should involve the British and Irish governments. The proposed devolution of powers resulted to differing views on power-sharing specifically between the Unionists, the Social Democratic and Labour Party that eventually led to the dissolution of the assembly.
