- Abstract
The article discusses the potential uses and implications of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, particularly large language models (LLMs), in scholarly publishing. The authors provide recommendations for responsible use of generative AI in scholarly publishing, including not listing AI tools as authors, transparently disclosing the use of AI, and not relying solely on AI for reviewing papers. They emphasize the importance of human authors and editors retaining final responsibility for the content and decisions in scholarly publishing. The authors acknowledge the complexity of ethical issues surrounding generative AI and call for a wider social discourse to develop professional norms for its appropriate use.
