What's the question again?
- Abstract
The article presents an example of an important problem in statistical interpretation, how a leading or misleading question used to compile statistics will lead to misleading statistics. In World War I, there were a great number of head wounds. When soldiers switched from cloth caps to metal helmets, the number of reported head wounds actually increased. The reason was that the helmets created a decline in the number of fatal wounds, which were not listed with the overall wound total. Thus, the prevented deaths appeared in the statistics as an increase in wounds.
