This article discusses the policy requirements for enhancing credit control and debt collection in South African municipalities. It emphasizes the importance of clear credit control policies, effective debt collection procedures, data management and reporting, and collaboration with stakeholders. The article also suggests strategies such as providing flexible repayment options, wage garnishment enforcement, property lien enforcement, collaboration with third parties, legal enforcement procedures, and incentive programs. It highlights relevant case law examples that municipalities can use for debt collection and concludes that prioritizing credit control and debt collection efforts is crucial for the financial sustainability of municipalities and the provision of essential services to their communities.
