- Title
AFRICAN UNION COMMISSION: Childhood Malnutrition.
- Abstract
The African Union Commission (AUC) and African Leaders for Nutrition met in Addis Ababa to discuss the issue of childhood malnutrition in Africa. It was reported that 86 million children under the age of five in Africa are affected by malnutrition, with 63 million underdeveloped, 10 million overweight, and 3 million underweight. The President of the African Development Bank Group emphasized the need for financing and stronger policies to address this issue. Additionally, the AUC and the World Bank signed an agreement to support the implementation of the Africa Think Tank Platform Project. Somalia also became a full member of the East African Community, and the UN released $100 million to support underfunded aid operations in several countries. However, a high-level WTO conference ended without any deals on agriculture and fisheries, highlighting divisions among its members. South Africa and India blocked a deal that aimed to simplify red tape and encourage foreign direct investment, which could have led to significant improvements in global welfare.
