- Title
NIGER: Post‐coup Hardships.
- Abstract
Niger, one of the world's poorest nations, is experiencing worsening economic hardships due to West African sanctions imposed after a coup in July. The sanctions have led to scarcity of food and medicine, skyrocketing prices, and blackouts. Imported rice, a national staple, has become significantly more expensive, and medicine stocks have fallen. The military rulers are also facing a freeze on the assets of the central bank, and the government has announced major budget cuts. Additionally, severe flooding since July has resulted in deaths, infrastructure collapse, and displacement of thousands of people. Aid agencies are working to support those affected by the floods, but major gaps in shelter, water, sanitation, and health services persist.
