- Abstract
This article presents information on the book "Measuring the Costs of Protection in China," by Shuguang Zhang, Yansheng Zhang and Zhongxin Wan. The book provides a preliminary analysis of the static costs of trade protection and the corresponding static benefits of liberalization for twenty-five highly protected goods in China. It describes the development of China's trade-administration system and sketches the obstacles to and prospects for further liberalization, as of June 1999. The book also compares the level of trade protection in China to that in Japan or South Korea and provides an overall assessment of China's trade system.
