The apostolic constitution Pascite gregem Dei replaced the entire Book VI of the Code of Canon Law. In light of the motivations and purposes of the reform of the penal law, the contribution aims to examine the discipline of expiatory punishments contained in the new Book by highlighting their renewed centrality within the Church's sanctioning response.
