- Abstract
The author is trying to evaluate in his paper the results of international communities' attempts of implementing the ideas of sustainable development. He also proposes a thesis that all failures made in this area up to now are bound to unjustified expectations that all people will understand and perform practically these assumptions to the same extent. The restriction only to the improvement of the natural environment's condition automatically excludes the majority of inhabitants of our planet, marginalized by their poverty, from participating in this task Therefore, sustainable development should assume the priority of social goals over ecological ones. The author, referring to Thomas Malthus's views, criticizes modern humanitarian activity, which, instead of bringing help to those who are materially handicapped, addicts them to this help and thus restricts their development potential. The paper also presents visions of alternative development of our civilization if the strategy of sustainable development is not realized in practice. In conclusion the author suggests that the strategy of sustainable development must include the vision of desired future. Otherwise, one of these alternative variants may be realized.
