- Abstract
As a newly elected President of the International Sociological Association I proposed a three-point agenda: First, sociologies in dialogue, I criticize sociology that framed within antagonistic binary categories (such as tradition/modernity, East/West, universalism/contextualism, etc.), I propose various sociologies to always be in dialogue. Second, one cannot but acknowledge the scars of the colonial era, but, postcolonial studies, which put so much emphasis on external factors and neglect local ones, can be both used and abused. After half a century of authoritarianism in the Arab World, postcolonial anti-imperialist academics and journalists have been unable to comprehend local power dynamics, or they have overlooked these. For them, democracy does not occupy the top list of their agenda. Thus, I suggest to supplement postcolonial approach with post-authoritarian approach. Finally secularization theory enter into a real crisis, and cannot account for the transformation of the relationship neither between the political and the religious nor the citizens and the religion. I proposed to pay more attention to post-secularism theories.
