- Title
Grief and Loss in Infertility.
- Authors
Harris, Darcy
- Abstract
The diagnosis and treatment of infertility involves many different types of losses that are often unacknowledged and misunderstood. This experience touches into issues related to attachment, gender role socialization, and grief related to both death and non-death losses. This article will explore the unique stresses, grief, and trauma that can accompany the diagnosis and treatment of infertility, including aspects of ambiguous loss, nonfinite loss, and chronic sorrow. Guidelines for support will be discussed, with an emphasis on education regarding the various treatment options and the need to validate the experience and losses for those who are involuntarily childless.
