- Abstract
Frequency is one of the measurable characteristics of texts. Data obtained via frequency analysis may contain important information on various topics such as first reading-writing and Turkish language grammar instruction, writing and evaluating Turkish language arts course textbooks, developing and revising curriculums, etc. In this study, frequencies of word, letter and syllables in all reading texts included in Turkish language arts course textbooks of elementary school 1 st, 2nd, 3 rd and 4th classes were determined, results were presented as categorical data considering classes and publishers. Texts of 1st classes consisted of fewer words. The number of the word increases as the level of class increases and also considering the progress from the first reading text to last reading text. It was found out that the words predominantly consist of 5 letters and 2-3 syllables, obey vowel and consonant harmony rules. It was determined that the ratio of the letters mostly and least used are almost equal according to the level of the classes and publishers in spite of the fact that there are differences. It was found out that the syllables are mostly in CV type, the average syllable number displays similarity according to the level of the classes and publishers, and this value increases considering the progress from the first reading text to last reading text. It was seen that the instructional sequence of speech sounds does not overlap with the usage letter frequencies but the frequency ratio of letters included in 1st group of 2019 Turkish Course Curriculum reaches to 47%. Considering the texts analysed within this study, obtaining similar results among different publishers within the same level of classes can be regarded as acceptable, on the other hand, obtaining similar results within the different level of classes can be regarded as noteworthy and should be emphasized.
