- Abstract
In this article the author discusses the animal traps made by the Oneida Community. It is explained that the Onieda Community was an experiment in Utopian living based in New York state, a religion-oriented, socialist group that believed in common ownership of property and labor and free love. The central focus of the article is on the creation and development of the animal traps by Sewell Newhouse that brought financial benefit to the community. A number of topics are addressed including the labor practices of the community, the economic history of the trap making business, and the diversification into the making of cutlery and other goods.
