- Abstract
The products formed in the photoreduction of para-nitroaniline were studied by the techniques of ESR spectroscopy and UV spectrophotometry. It was shown that the main radical products of the reaction in the presence of oxygen are the phenyl radical (in benzene solution) and the benzyl, phenylcarboxyl, and phenyl radicals (in toluene solution). The rate-limiting step in the formation of radical products and solvent hydroxylation products is intersystem crossing in the nitrene adduct with molecular oxygen.
