- Abstract
Introduction Teacher is the person responsible for maintaining teaching activities at the institutions serving formal education (Erden, 1998). Thus teaching profession is a special expert area requiring pedagogical knowledge and skills. Today teaching profession also needs special knowledge on study field and skills as well. So that, although teaching status and repuation depend on country and cultural context, thanks to the fact that teaching profession has not been accepted as a mere money-making but also seen as a holy thing (Şişman, 2011). Teaching, different from others, is a profession that is realized by means of high communication and interaction. It is also necessarry to have some Professional values besides having some Professional knowledge and skills. There are also some extra values and norms for teachers in addition to those rules defined by means of legal regulations and laws. Values are the criteria defining the things, which are accepted as valuable. The values having desired features are guides for an organization's members and draws them a common way. Thus it can be said that values are the guides in understanding and evaluating people's behaivours (Demirtaş ve Ekmekyapar, 2012). Kouzes and Posner (1993) stated that values as a guide for the problems can provide an inner compass maintaining responsible behaivours. There are some studies dealing with secondary teachers' life values and individual values but there is not any survey tool in order to determine their Professional values. Within this study it is aimed to develop a survey to define and determine teachers' Professional values. Method This study, aiming to develop a reliable and valid survey for determining teachers' Professional values has been designed with mix research methodology. Exploratory Design has been used. In this design the researchers first collect qualitative data and then builds quantitative side upon its findings (Büyüköztürk, Çakmak, Akgün, Karadeniz, ve Demirel, 2008). Findings The analyses provides us strong clues proving that our survey is a reliable and valid tool. It has been found that five factors explains the % 64,254 of the varience, and Cronbach Alpha differs between ".74" and ".86". The cornfirmatory factor analyses has been applied in order to decide whether 5 factors are proving the model or not. It has been seen the good fitting index values are at optimum level and thus the model has been proved. Conclusion At the end of this study a survey tool has been developped with five sub scales; Professional development and success, colleagues' relations, individual awareness, being sensible for national and spiritual values and scientifical dimension in terms of 5 dimensional 21 items survey (1-never, 2- rarely, 3-sometimes, 4-usually, 5-always). As a result it has been that the survey has enough psychometric features. Because of the fact there has not been any survey for secondary school teachers' Professional values, our survey will contribute to the literatüre by means of providing a reliable and valid tool in this subject area.
