- Title
An Unpublished Letter from John Erskine to Jonathan Edwards.
- Abstract
Less than a year before Edwards's death, the Scottish minister John Erskine wrote to Edwards informing him that in Scotland Freedom of the Will was being misappropriated to affirm Lord Kames's views on liberty as expressed in his Essays on the Principles of Morality and Natural Religion. In two of his letters to Erskine in 1757, Edwards explained the differences he had with Kames. Erskine's attempt to convince an Edinburgh bookseller to print an edition of Edwards's remarks against Kames was not successful, but he remained hopeful that he could secure a Glasgow printer through his connections. Besides giving an update on his collection of subscriptions for Edwards's forthcoming book on Original Sin in his letter, Erskine also relayed information on the latest prophetic musings by the Scottish evangelical minister David Imrie. As this is the only known extant letter from Erskine to Edwards, it provides a rare opportunity to hear from his most frequent Scottish correspondent.
