- Abstract
The present study by Peter Ulrich Weiß examines the history of the German central archives during the system upheavals after 1933 and 1945. The study focuses on the respective central archives - the Reich Archive, the German Central Archive, and the Federal Archive - from the Weimar Republic through the Third Reich to the German division. The author analyzes the constraints and leeway of the archivists based on 70 work biographies and sheds light on the political turning points. The study offers interesting insights and nuanced interpretations that combine the current state of research with new findings. It shows, among other things, that the State Security penetrated the GDR archival system earlier than previously assumed and that the central archives of East and West developed in reverse proportion in terms of dictatorship burdens. The study presents the German archival system in the age of extremes in a well-founded and convincing manner.
