- Abstract
In the book "The Diver of Paestum" by classical archaeologist Tonio Hölscher, the famous tomb painting from Paestum, which depicts a young man diving from a tower, is examined. Hölscher convincingly argues that the depiction of the diver refers to the transition from adolescence to adulthood and does not have eschatological significance. He contextualizes the theme of the painting with other depictions of young men by the sea and shows that such activities were not uncommon. Hölscher also highlights that there were similar liminal places for young women where they had their first erotic experiences. The book offers an interesting insight into youth culture and body culture in ancient Greece.
