- Abstract
Preterm infants receive enteral feeding through orogastric tube during the first days life due to their characteristics such as being physiologically and neurologically immature, having weak oral-motor reflexes, not being able to ensure coordination between sucking, swallowing, and respiration, not being able to maintain flexion posture during feeding, remaining awake for a short time, not being able to maintain physiological values at normal level during feeding. However, continuation of feeding through orogastric tube for a long time causes delay in oral feeding and failure to acquire motor skills necessary for oral feeding. Therefore, preterm infants should begin oral feeding when they are ready. Assessment of oral feeding readiness of preterm infants is extremely important in order to perform a safe oral feeding. At the present time, there is not any list of criteria or guideline, which is universally proven, about beginning time of oral feeding readiness in preterm infants and time of transition from orogastric tube feeding to oral bottle feeding. Decision of transition to oral feeding should be made by nurse by taking objective criteria into consideration. In this review, the subjects of oral feeding in preterm infants, factors affecting oral feeding readiness, and how neonatal nurses will evaluate oral feeding readiness of preterm infants were examined in the light of up-to-date literature data.
