- Abstract
The aim of this paper is to investigate how Brazilian High School textbooks treat metaphors. For this purpose, 5 (five) textbooks, published between 2003 and 2013, were analyzed. In these textbooks we take into account the following aspects: (i) Metaphor definition; (ii) Teaching Context; (iii) Source of the examples; (iv) Didactic strategies and (v) Nature of exercises. The results point to an incipient work with the metaphors, based on the Aristotelian tradition. Therefore, the findings suggest the need to reformulate the way in which metaphors are discussed in the textbooks, in order to implement more systematic works. To do so, the Cognitive Linguistics provides theoretical-methodological framework capable to describe the phenomenon from its cognitive and linguistic nature, considering its realization in multiples discourses.
