- Abstract
The first news agencies emerged and developed in accordance with the socio-economic demands. These were established by private people or by media companies for non profit use. Goverments who wanted to control news flow and media, later opened their own news agencies to spread their ideology, propaganda and their own interests. In Russia, the first news agencies were opened by owners of newspapers and businessmen. Later on, all news agencies and news flow passed to state monopoly. After transition from Russian Empire to Soviet Union, full state monopoly has been applied to news agencies. This study focused on news agencies in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union in which a free market economic system was accepted and permission of private companies was granted. Especially to answer the question whether state news agencies have the same power in Russia and if powerful new private agencies were sought.
