- Title
SHOO FLY!
- Abstract
The article discusses the effect of house flies in the dissemination of the food-poisoning bacteria salmonella in poultry. The article describes how entomologist Christopher J. Geden and microbiologist Peter S. Holt studied whether flies could obtain salmonella from chicken hens and in turn infect healthy birds. The article explains how the scientists placed fly pupae within the cages of chicken hens exposed to salmonella. The scientists found that the ingestion of salmonella infected flies was the primary mechanism through which the transmission of the bacteria occurred. Details are provided regarding the scientists' recommendation to growers and farmers to engage in precautionary measures such as utilizing surveillance equipment and pest treatment.
