- Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) involves an irreversible loss of renal function. Renal failure can result in large spectrum of oral manifestations such as uremic stomatitis, dry mouth, taste change, mucosal petechiae and ecchymosis, renal osteodystrophy, and periodontal diseases. The dental management of CKD patients may be complex due to the medications taken by the patient for inadequately functioning kidney. The article aims to provide a knowledge of oral and maxillofacial manifestations of CKD. A literature review was done by collecting 35 articles from 2000-2017 on oral and maxillofacial manifestations and its association with Chronic kidney diseases. The objective of the study was to understand the various dimensions of CKD and its association with oral and maxillofacial manifestations which helps in easy identification and holistic treatment. The growing change in lifestyle and trends results in increased chronic renal diseases in the present-day scenario. Hence, a thorough understanding of the oral manifestations would enable the oral physicians to help the patients in need, as in few cases, oral physicians may be the first person to diagnose such patients.
