- Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of crowding in orthodontic patients visiting the hospital for treatment. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 100 patients selected randomly. The degree of crowding was evaluated on dental cast of pre-treatment records of orthodontic patients using Little’s irregularity index. The chief complaint of the patient was recorded along with their history on a pro forma sheet. The patients were further divided into three groups based on the Angle’s classification of malocclusion. The distribution of patients based on the severity of crowding was expressed in percentage. Results: Angle’s Class I malocclusion was present in 56 patients. Of these, 14 patients had mild crowding and 42 patients had moderate crowding. Angle’s Class II malocclusion was present in 26 patients; of these, 10 patients had mild crowding. Angle’s Class III malocclusion was present in five patients, of these one patient had mild crowding and four patients had moderate crowding. Conclusion: Angle’s Class I was the most common malocclusion trait compared to other sagittal dental discrepancies. The prevalence of moderate anterior crowding was greater as opposed to severe and mild crowding.
