- Abstract
Background: The concern with facial esthetics has followed the rise of civilizations, and faces representing the ideal of beauty have always been used as references. The smile is part of this beauty standard, which is measured subjectively. A harmonious smile depends on the balance that involves several factors, from its width to its ratio with facial outlines, tooth color and shape, as well as gingival exposure and contour. Different forms such as square, triangle, and oval will help in selecting teeth for prosthodontic rehabilitation. Aim: The aim of the study is to survey the prevalence of crown shape in maxillary central incisors of individuals among South Indian adult population. Materials and Methods: Study population comprised 300 (150 males and 150 females) individuals aging 20-25 years of South Indian population. Two photographs: One frontal profile and one intraoral picture were taken for analysis. The images were standardized and measured using KLONK image measurement tool. Result: 118 oval-shaped, 18 square-shaped, and 17 triangular-shaped incisors were among 152 oval-shaped faces. Likewise 26 oval-shaped, 52 square-shaped, and 6 triangular-shaped incisors were noted among the 84 square-shaped faces. Similarly, there were 11 oval-shaped, 23 square-shaped, and 29 triangular-shaped central incisors among 63 triangular-shaped faces. Conclusion: No significant relationship between the shapes of the face and tooth, or the association of these with gender was observed. The oval shape, both for men and women, was the most prevalent, and the triangular shape was the least common for both genders.
