The article offers information on the decision of retired independent researcher Tim Smith to volunteer to work on a committee that is focused on historical ecology. Smith started to examine whaling logbooks to know if historical catch estimates could be improved on. Data from eighteenth- to twentieth-century European and American whaling have enabled Smith and his colleagues to quantify the recovery degree of right-whale abundance in the waters of New Zealand.
