- Abstract
Since signing the Antarctic Treaty in 1983, China has endeavored to establish and intensify its activities in the polar region. One of the largest economic investments made consists of the Chinese Antarctic Science Program, which has developed extensively since its foundation. Chinese activities in Antarctica, however, can be understood as an effective mechanism of power projection. Based on Joseph Nye's concept of soft power, and Wilson's of smart power, this article will analyze the process of China's evolution in Antarctica, from the creation of the treaty to the present day, in order to understand how its scientific program acts as an instrument of power.
